Portsalon may not be as famous as some other links courses in Ireland but it is equally deserving of its fine reputation as a true links in the old style. Portsalon was one of the founder members of the Golf Union of Ireland, dating back to 1891.

As with most of the golfer links, improvements are needed from time to time and Portsalon commissioned Pat Ruddy (renowned for his European Club) to redesign 8 of it 18 holes. That work is now completed and portsalon now in its third century has a championship length of over 6400yards.

These new holes blend in so well with the existing ones that we challenge the visitor to say which is old and which is new. Stretching along Portsalon Beach on the shores of Lough Swilly and protected from north and west winds by the majestic mountains of Donegal are those narrow undulating fairways winding through deep dunes.

Soft sand bunkers, large natural greens and meandering streams offer the golfer testing and enjoyable golf on a links steeped in history. portsalon is one of those little known gems found in north Donegal, friendly and informal with stunning views to mellow the most ardent golfer. Having just played a round at Portsalon, you have immersed yourself in history, you have walked the same sod, putting the same greens, looked out to sea over the same whites sand and watched the same mountains come and go in the changing light just as those early golfers did over 100 years ago.

If following in the footsteps of those early pioneering golfers doesn't stir your imagination, lift your spirits and make you want to come back for more, then pinch yourself to make sure you are still alive. Portsalon, A Truly Beautiful and Haunting Experience.
